Kira and others...
I started this page because of a picture taken a long time ago of our cat Kira helping me out with a physics problem. Kira (1992-2010) really hated it when we got a flat-screen monitor; her revenge was to sandbag me whenever it suits her. So, that is as good an explanation I have for the grainy photo above (ca. 1995, Vancouver).
Ever fly with a cat in an airplane from across the continental United States? Kira and I both recovered from the experience, but it is not one that I am ever going to repeat. The above photo is of Kira enjoying a little fall sunshine in her new home on Long Island (click for high resolution version of this photograph).
In addition to Mona and myself, Kira had to put up with a new household addition; Ozzie is shown above at a local beach. Ozzie started off at the Guide Dog Foundation, but ended up with us instead. Kira was rather selective in terms of who she likes (to put it mildly), but Ozzie passed the test...
The above photo shows me in a carefully posed picture in front of our Bruker IFS 113v spectrometer, showing the reflectance unit with a standard LHe bolometer. This instrument is used mainly for routine spectroscopy that does not require the synchrotron. (Click on the picture to view the article associated with it.)
This is a more recent picture of me taken by Mona while we were at La Posada in Santa Fe (which, by the way, is absolutely fabulous) in the spring of 2006. I know there are a couple of my colleagues who are probably tired of seeing me, and who have wondered for a long time "Who is Mona"? Well, see the photograph at the bottom of the page.
This is a picture of Mona and myself at Laulasmaa Spa, just outside of Tallinn in Estonia while we were at the LEES 06 meeting at the beginning of July (2006). This picture was taken in the morning, but in the summer it looks the same at 9 o'clock at night!
